DiscCat Progress

Just a quick update to let you know how work on the new version is going.

I have finished putting in tabs, and updated the database layout.  Barcodes are no longer essential internally, so I should be able to have a manual addition process for adding items with no barcode (of course these will not be able to be searched for online or submitted back to  http://www.upcdatabase.com/).

The new database format stores all of the previous information (title, barcode, type, whether you own it or not) as well as a bunch of new information (wishlist, rented,  date record was added, date record was last modified, IMDB link, region, and a description/synopsis where you can enter any additional information you want to record).

My plans before release are to add all of this new information to the interface, and all going well, add in cover image support from freecovers.net .  I am still investigating how possible it will be to add additional data sources such as itemlookup.net and checkupc.com.

I am also planning on adding an options screen for choosing what types you want in your list.  Additional types that will be available will be Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, Playstation 2, Xbox, Playstation, and Gamecube.  If you have any types you want included, please leave a comment below and I will try and add it.

ETA: I have 1 more day off work tomorrow, and I do not expect to finish it in that time.  I am then out of town for the rest of the week, so realistically, I don’t see a release happening before  18th of July.  Hopefully the wait will be worth it 🙂

  1. I’m pretty pumped for the future adds star trek blu had no UPC so that sucked. Lots of wii games too. Thanks for work

  2. Thanks for the positive feedback, always good to have constructive comments.

I am back from my time away, but back to work in a few hours time 🙁

  3. I love this app. Would you be able to add some new categories to the list…digital dvd (for thoes of us who keep a copy also) digital cd (same deal) and something for burned copies of dvd/cds. Thank you so much!

  4. What I will do is look at adding the ability for you to have custom categories, basically because I have no idea what to do for icons for those 🙂

  5. this is a great app but it’s to bad you restricted it to cd usage
i would like to use it for all the thing I buy, like book
just add a way to create our own category.
and for the cover, you already use the cam for the barcode, why not using it for taking pics of our cd/dvd/bd/game/book?

  6. While I do have custom categories planned for the next release, I haven’t added books as the information available for books is so different to the information for dvd/blu-ray etc. Books have titles, authors, publishers, ISBN, etc.
My plan (which may or may not ever happen) is once I get Disccat to a level of functionality I am happy with, I will work on a similar program just for books. There are so many online sources of book information that getting all of that information isn’t difficult, but the protocols used are very different to the simple ones I use for getting barcode information so it is no small task.
As for not using the camera, while the camera is used for barcode scanning, I use an external app called Barcode Scanner to actually do the scanning. I have not actually investigated how to use the camera myself yet, so I decided to go with an online source of clean high quality images first. Camera support will be added eventually, as I do plan on learning how to use the Android camera.
